When constructing a new roof, there is the opportunity to increase the depth of the rafters, and also increase the spacing to 600mm.  This reduces the amount of timber that bridges the insulation layer and makes a more thermally efficient roof.

TLX Gold is fitted above the rafters, either draped with a 10mm sag, or else used taut and counterbattened with 38mm deep counterbatten (to ensure sufficient ventilation under the tiles). Rigid or fibrous insulation is used between the rafters, and if they are not sufficiently deep, or if a lower U value is required, then an underdraw of rigid board can be used in addition.
