Space Saving Insulation

TLX Gold is an incredible space-saving insulation solution. This is because it is a combined breathable insulation and roofing underlay in a single layer. It has a shiny, breathable under surface that reflects heat. This means you won’t need to install an additional vapour barrier underneath. A breather membrane like TLX Gold is most commonly used on the top of roof rafters under the tiles.

This 2-in-1 insulating breather membrane offers an easier airtight option than PIR. PIR is more difficult to install and creates more waste. Plus, it requires more thickness to meet building regulations. However, PIR can be effective when used in conjunction with other types of insulation, in which case you will need less of each product and your layers of each will be thinner. This will further contribute to the space-saving solutions offered by TLX Gold.

2-in-1 Insulating Breather Membrane

As already mentioned above, one of the elements that make TLX Gold multifoil insulation so unique is that it is a 2-in-1 breathable membrane insulation. In layman’s terms, this means that it is both an insulator and a breather membrane. It sits at the coldest level of the temperature profile, therefore keeping everything beneath it warm, which eliminates the need for an additional vapour barrier. This saves you the installation time of adding another layer and the expense of buying two different products. 

When you use TLX Gold insulation there is no condensation risk, even without a vapour barrier. This makes the product easier to install again because you only have to add one layer of product across your whole roof space rather than two layers of product. The product is unique and vents moisture like a breather membrane, whilst insulating like a traditional insulator. TLX Gold insulation is a BBA-certified membrane which is very cleverly designed to meet the requirements of modern-day roofing and this is one of the biggest factors that makes this product so unique.

Can be Draped Over the Rafters 

TLX Gold is the only roof insulation of its kind that can be draped. Not only does this
mean that it is easier to install, but it also means that it is a more effective space-saving solution. The most appealing aspect of using TLX Gold insulation draped over the rafters is that there is no need to raise the roof and install counter battens, which is standard practice with many competitor products. This means that the insulation process is less labour-intensive. 

The reason TLX Gold can be draped in the way that other insulation products can’t is because it is 33 mm thick but it compresses down to only 3 mm. This means that you can use it draped between the rafters with the tile battens straight over. There are benefits to draping TLX Gold in this way. Firstly, to allow any water coming through the tiles to go down to the gutter. Secondly, it contributes to the ventilated space required in the tile battens.

TLX Gold is a versatile insulation solution. If you don’t want to drape it then you can also pull it taut and secure it conventionally using counter battens. When the product is used with a counter batten, the counter batten provides sufficient space for both drainage and ventilation. We recommend using a 38 mm deep counter batten if possible, to compensate for the upward expansion of the product.

Easy to Install

TLX Gold is robust and easy to fit. It features ultrasonically welded seams as well as a
membrane lap extension on the long edge which marries onto an integral adhesive tape on the next roll down. Not only do these features make fitting incredibly easy they also ensure the continuity of the insulation without cold spots.

Another benefit of these easy-to-install features is that they ensure you don’t have lumpy double-thickness layers on the overlap that are uneven to batten over. This makes the overall finish of your installation smoother and more efficient. If you are installing your roof insulation yourself or are new to roof insulation then TLX Gold insulation is a great product to start with because it is so easy to install.

Can be Combined With Other Insulation

TLX Gold insulation is much thinner than others on the market. This could be pitched as a disadvantage because the R-value (a measure of the amount of thermal protection the product provides) is rather less. However in reality additional thickness is not always a benefit. In fact, bulkier products tend to be trickier to install and their overlaps are also more difficult to cover and to smooth out. 

What’s more, the thicker the insulation you use, the less space you will have left for other insulators. For example, thick insulation will take up space that would be better occupied by a low conductivity PIR board that will help you to achieve the lowest possible U-value in the rafter depth available. Combining insulation with other insulation is the best way to achieve desired U-Values, particularly in a newly built property.
