TLX Gold Multifoil Insulation – The Perfect Choice For Barn Conversions

Converting a barn into a functional and liveable space is a dream for many. Barn conversions are often beautiful spaces with original features and high levels of visual appeal.

Barn conversions are increasingly popular. They are a great way to repurpose historic structures that might otherwise be destroyed or left derelict. They create unique living spaces, and completed barn conversions blend the convenience of a modern home with the traditional character of an older property.

But barn conversions are not without their challenges. These large buildings can be draughty and difficult to heat unless they are properly insulated.

Here’s everything you need to know about insulating a barn conversion and why TLX Gold multifoil insulation is the perfect choice:

Common Problems With Loft Conversions

Insulating a barn conversion is no easy task. This is because barns tend to be large spaces with very high ceilings. When originally constructed, they were not designed to be habitable spaces. Barns that are converted are often constructed using brick or stone walls, but without the central cavity insulation that a conventional property will boast as standard. One of the main problems that those converting barns into homes face, therefore, is how to insulate the walls without ruining their rustic appearance. How can you make a barn conversion meet building regulations? And what about the roof?

TLX Gold insulationFor any home to be comfortable, it must be properly insulated. Otherwise, you will be left with a property that is cold, draughty, and prone to damp and mould.

Barns roofs are often removed to complete barn conversions. This can be a time-consuming process. But it also means that a modern roof space can be installed. This makes it easier to properly insulate. If the roof isn’t being removed and replaced, then upgrading the roof insulation can be one of the most challenging aspects of the renovation project.

What are the Benefits of TLX Gold?

TLX Gold is one of the most superior multifoils on the market. It was the first insulating breather membrane of its kind.

Some of the benefits of TLX Gold include:

No need to counter-batten. TLX Gold is the only insulating breather membrane that can be installed either draped or taut. This means that if you don’t have the space to counter-batten your insulation then this is the right choice for you. This also means it is easy to fit. The draping technique is both fast and efficient.
2-in-1 insulating breathable membrane. Whilst it is well known for its insulating properties, TLX Gold is also fully breathable. When the humidity in a roof space increases, TLX Gold responds by becoming more breathable. This means that there is no risk of interstitial condensation when using this product. The product as a whole has a breathability rating of 0.021 MNs/g. This means that your barn conversion will be unlikely to suffer from condensation or damp. Preventing damp from forming is a significant benefit of TLX Gold because damp can cause both health issues to the residents in the property and structural problems to the property itself.
Maximise internal space. At just 33mm thick, TLX Gold can be compressed down to just 3mm. It is an incredibly thin insulator. This is important if you are insulating an existing barn roof. There is no need to raise the roof to install counter battens, as you do with other multifoils, which will save both time and money.
Waterproofing and windproofing. Multifoils play a key role in waterproofing and windproofing a building. TLX Gold is also UV and heat-resistant. This means that, unlike other non-breathable forms of insulation, TLX Gold can help to weatherproof your building. It will be less susceptible to draughts and substances such as dust, rain and snow.

How to Install TLX Gold in a Barn Conversion

Adding insulation to the roof of a barn conversion can be tricky. These types of roofs tend to be non-standard and boast irregular and shallow rafters. In conjunction with the solid barn walls, this means that a fully efficient insulation system can be a challenge. But multifoil insulation for the wall and roof insulation can help manage this issue.

Whilst not all barn conversions are required to meet building regulations, the required U-Value for a renovation project is 0.15 W/m²K. There are many ways to meet this requirement, but the most efficient way is to use a combination of multifoil insulation with rigid insulation. This will save internal space and create good airflow.

If you have a deep rafter, then you can use more insulation between these. Standard rafters are between 400mm and 600mm apart. Some barns have rafters that are further apart than this. These wider rafters typically encourage a good U-Value, but packing in as much traditional insulation as possible into these gaps will also help to prevent draughts.

To install the TLX Gold multifoil insulation you can either pull it taut and add counter
battens, as you would with standard multifoil insulation. Or you canHow to install TLX Gold drape the multifoil insulation, which will create good air circulation. This is very important when installing multifoil insulation and this draping approach is unique to TLX Gold. This approach can be used for pitched roof insulation but not for flat roof insulation.

TLX Gold is incredibly easy to install. This means that if you are undertaking your own barn conversion project, you won’t need to call in the experts to insulate your home. Builders and contractors choose to work with TLX Gold because it is made of high-quality materials that are easy to install. And you can do so independently without any training, provided you have the right tools and enthusiasm. You’ll be amazed at the difference it will make to your barn home.
