Existing homes can be made more energy efficient by the retrospective fitting of insulation. To save costs, this is generally done internally. Even a small amount of insulation can significantly reduce heat loss through a wall or roof. Reducing air leakage can also have a major impact on comfort and warmth inside.
When retro-fitting insulation to an existing building, it is essential to also consider the movement of water vapour within the structure, to prevent the risk of interstitial condensation.
In most houses, existing rafters are likely to be at 400mm centres and either 75 or 100mm deep. Houses built or re-roofed over the last 15 years may have a breathable underlay, older houses will have a non-breathable type.
Rooms within roof spaces such as attic bedrooms are frequently insulated from the outside by removing the roof covering and fitting additional insulation with TLX Gold insulating breather membrane.
If the house does not need re-roofing, an alternative is to insulate internally.
Where a building has attractive stone or brick walls, then insulation is fitted internally to maintain the outward appearance and character of the building.
Solid masonry walls are insulated by fitting timber studs down the wall and installing rigid boards between the studs. TLX Silver across the front of the studs provides thermal insulation and a very effective air and water vapour barrier. A batten forms a service cavity before plasterboard is fitted.
