Why is Multifoil Insulation so Important?
With U-Value requirements tightening in recent years, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to meet current building regulations. In the past, traditional forms of insulation like mineral wool or PIR board were added in-between rafters to improve thermal efficiency, but the performance was largely limited due to shallow rafters. For example, if you have 75mm deep rafters, you can only fit 75mm of PIR board in between them.
Multifoils are so important because they help to improve the thermal performance of the entire structure. They have shiny surfaces that reflect heat, making the most of static air layers next to them. Still air is a good insulator, so these unventilated gaps contribute to the thermal performance. TLX Silver needs unventilated air gaps adjacent to its shiny outer surfaces to reflect heat. Contrary, if you ventilate the air gap, you will lose heat.
When used as part of a hybrid system with PIR board or mineral wool, TLX Silver delivers an optimum thermal performance, helping to adhere to U-Value regulations. TLX multifoils are an integral part of the insulation profile. They are thin, easy to install and very effective insulators.
The Variety of Different Applications for TLX Silver Multifoil Insulation
Multifoil Roof Insulation for Pitched Roofs
Potentially the most common TLX Silver application is pitched roofs. Simply install TLX Silver beneath the rafters, fixed in place with 38x38mm battens. Setting the battens crosswise will limit thermal bridging and improve thermal efficiency. It creates an excellent airtight vapour barrier which limits condensation risk, plus its shiny outer layers reflect heat. Additionally, install PIR board or mineral wool in between the rafters for added thermal benefit.
Loft Insulation for Loft Conversions
Converting a cold roof space into living accommodation is a popular way of increasing the internal size of a house, creating an extra bedroom, or living area. You can also increase the value of your property. Insulating with TLX Silver multifoil insulation is a fantastic space-saving solution for loft conversions where head height is limited. It is 30mm thick, the ideal thickness for a multifoil, and it provides all the benefits of a vapour barrier, whilst also increasing thermal performance.
Flat Roof Insulation
Firstly, you need to take care to minimise condensation risk when insulating a flat roof. They require a 50mm ventilated air space below the deck to prevent condensation from forming. The best way to do this is to use PIR insulation in between the rafters and install TLX Silver across the bottom of the rafter. TLX Silver prevents water vapour from entering the roof space from the rooms below, and any vapour entering from above will be swept away with the ventilated air in the cold space above.
Dormer Insulation
Dormer cheeks are made of timber studs with sheathing and a breather membrane on the outside, plus tile, slate, or weatherboard cladding. Fit insulation between the studs with TLX Silver across the face of the studs. A batten provides a service cavity before the plasterboard.
Wall Insulation
Use TLX Silver in all types of wall structures, including timber frame, dwarf walls and solid masonry walls. Install TLX Silver across the front face of the timber studs, providing both thermal resistance and a vapour barrier too.
Insulation for New Build Extensions
When constructing a new roof, there is the opportunity to increase the depth of the rafters. Where possible, increase the rafter spacing to 600mm. This reduces the amount of timber that bridges the insulation layer, making a more thermally efficient roof. Fit a breathable roofing membrane above the rafters, either rigid or fibrous insulation between rafters and TLX Silver below rafters.
Insulating Barn Conversions
Insulate a barn roof by fitting a new breathable membrane above the rafters. Fit rigid board or mineral fibre between the rafters, and TLX Silver below the rafter. A batten and plasterboard complete the roof construction. Additionally, this method conceals the rafters. Alternatively, if you are exposing the rafters, install TLX Gold 2-in-1 insulating breathable membrane above the rafters to preserve internal character.
Existing Home Insulation Upgrades
Upgrading the insulation in your home with TLX Silver has many benefits. It improves thermal efficiency, manages condensation risk, reduces energy bills and can add to the value of your property. Upgrading to modern standards can be tricky, but TLX Silver is quick and easy to install. Additionally, with PIR board or mineral wool, it can easily meet building regulations for peace of mind.
DIY Projects
Multifoil insulation is a great choice for DIY projects like a free-standing shed or garage. Secure TLX Silver in place properly so that it creates a seamless, airtight layer. Use a high-quality tape such as Venture tape 1507 CW for the joins.
Insulating Timber Suspended Floors
Air gaps are an important part of a build-up. In timber-suspended floors you can create the space needed for an optimum 20mm air gap. TLX Silver has to go on top of floor joists before the floorboards so you will need access from the top side.
